Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was one of the most influential, popular and prolific composers of the classical period. A child prodigy, from an early age he began composing over 600 works, including some of the most famous pieces of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral music.

Clarinet Quintet in A major, K.581 (1789)
Dedication: Anton Stadler

1. Allegro (0:00)
2. Larghetto (6:18)
3. Menuetto (12:44)
4. Allegretto con variazioni (18:44)

Wiener Oktett (Alfred Boskovsky - Anton Fietz - Philipp Matheis - Günther Breitenbach - Nikolaus Hübner)
Studio recording, Vienna, X.1963

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, K. 581, was written in 1789 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. A clarinet quintet is a work for one clarinet and a string quartet. Although originally written for basset clarinet, in contemporary performances it is usually played on a clarinet in A. It was Mozart's only completed clarinet quintet, and is one of the earliest and best-known works written especially for the instrument. It remains to this day one of the most admired of the composer's works. The quintet is sometimes referred to as the Stadler Quintet; Mozart so described it in a letter of April 1790. Mozart also wrote a trio for clarinet, viola and piano for Stadler, the so-called Kegelstatt Trio, in 1786.

Composition and premiere
The composer indicated that the work was finished on 29 September 1789. It received its premiere on 22 December of the same year, in one of the four annual Vienna performances of the Tonkünstler-Societät, an organization that existed to fund pensions for widows and orphans of musicians. The main item on the program was a cantata, Il natale d'Apollo, by Vincenzo Righini; Mozart's work was performed between the two halves of this work. The solo clarinet part was taken by Stadler, the first violin part by Joseph Zistler (1744–1794).

This is a relatively early work in Saint-Saëns' output, but it already shows the considerable skills of its creator. As many classical music enthusiasts know, the composer was a child prodigy and thus evolved his mature style rather quickly. This piece has all the sophistication of the work of a seasoned master, at least in its instrumental writing. Its music may not divulge the originality or thematic distinctiveness of many of Saint-Saëns' later works, but it has charm and a deft sense of humor. This Tarantella is catchy from its opening notes: zesty rhythms and menacing dance music combine to create an amusingly creepy atmosphere that augurs the mood and writing in such works as Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The music is lively, not as fast, however, as that usually associated with tarantellas, which often have a frenzied character. Here, Saint-Saëns seems to want to underscore the myth about the origins of this Italian dance, which was thought to result from the bite of a tarantula spider or to serve as its cure. He makes the flute and clarinet slither and swirl and dance so menacingly, often in unison, and partners them with discreet and subtle orchestral writing. This is a fine piece now sometimes heard in an arrangement for flute, clarinet, and piano.

Mozart's Requiem in D minor is one of the most well-loved choral-orchestral works from the entire Classical canon. This arrangement for clarinet quintet is accessible and appropriate for any school, church or concert setting.

The chords begin piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised by the choir after two measures, on Lacrymosa dies illa ("This tearful day"). Then, after two measures, the soprano line begin a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget ("will be reborn"), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The choir is forte by m. 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death.

Franz Süssmayr who completed the work, brings the choir to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart.

This easy clarinet duet arrangement of Alan Menken's song 'Colors of the Wind' is from the hit Disney film Pocahontas. It is written very simply and would be ideal for beginners to about UK Grade 2 level. The highest note in Clarinet 1 is top line F on the stave. The tempo is deliberately leisurely; this conveys the calm, measured feel of the piece. This arrangement is available to buy on Sheet Music Plus. Click here to download:

Program notes from Neil W. Levin:
"In 1986 the well-known clarinetist David Shifrin invited Schoenfield to compose a trio for clarinet, violin, and piano, but since he was engaged at the time with a number of other projects, it was only in 1990 that he began sketching out the work. For the composer, the endeavor echoed a long-held interest in creating music aimed at celebratory Hassidic gatherings and weekday or weeknight festivities as well as at classical chamber music concert audiences completely outside the Hassidic milieu. This posed an aesthetic challenge, for the music would have to be entertaining and artistic at the same time—precisely the kind of challenge Schoenfield has welcomed in fashioning many of his compositions. The resulting Trio for Clarinet, Violin & Piano is an ingenious blend of artistic ensemble, instrumental virtuosity, and deliberately fragmented references to melodies that might well have been heard at various Hassidic courts in Europe. Many of those courts regularly employed or invited purely instrumental bands of klezmorim for their celebrations. Thus, this piece features inflections and ornaments typical of the clarinet playing in those bands, in both Europe and America. But much of the writing for all three instruments here goes well beyond such folk idioms in its sophistication, recalling moments in chamber music by composers such as Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Bartók.

The first movement, Freylakh, is so titled because of its melodic and rhythmic representation of one of the best-known dances among eastern European Jewry. Although it is not especially or exclusively Hassidic, it was heard at Hassidic courts in the context of festivities. The frenetic energy and intensity in this work, however, generally exceeds that of any performance of a freylakh by klezmorim in the context of entertainment or dance accompaniment. From the outset, it is clear that this is primarily a concert work rather than Gebrauchsmusik, regardless of the nature of its audience. Schoenfield has described March, the second movement, as “bizarre and somewhat diabolical.” Recalling and manipulating known folk motifs, its melodic and rhythmic material reflects a typical march at a Hassidic court during a festive occasion. The third movement is titled Niggun in reference to mystical, deeply spiritual Hassidic melos in general. The final movement, Kozatzke—a Russian Cossack dance often adopted by Jews at wedding celebrations—incorporates bits of both Russian and eastern European Jewish dance tunes."

I recently performed this piece with friends at the Glenn Gould School at Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, ON, where I am currently a student for my Bachelors of Piano Performance:
